Full terms

The readable version.

This is a plain-language permission statement for Alex’s photographs—not a transfer of copyright and not an official DEF CON policy.

01

What this covers

Unless a gallery or photograph says otherwise, these terms apply to photographs created by Alex Chaveriat and published in his DEF CON or hacker-community galleries on photos.alexchaveriat.com or alexchaveriat.com. Alex retains the copyright.

02

The permission

You receive a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to copy, display, share, and reasonably adapt covered photographs for personal or non-profit educational purposes. Editorial use is also permitted when the credit requirements below are met. All uses must follow these terms.

03

Credit

Attribution is appreciated but not required for personal or non-profit educational use. Editorial use requires the credit “Photo: Alex Chaveriat” and a link to the original gallery when practical. Please do not apply a misleading credit or claim authorship.

04

Commercial and promotional uses

Commercial advertising, sponsorship, product packaging, merchandise, paid campaigns, standalone resale, stock licensing, and model-training uses require written permission. Editorial use by a commercial publication is permitted when the photograph illustrates reporting, commentary, criticism, documentary work, or historical coverage rather than promoting a product or service, and when the required credit is provided.

05

People, art, and marks in the frame

This permission covers Alex’s copyright in the photograph only. It does not grant publicity, privacy, trademark, or other rights belonging to people, artists, badge creators, vendors, DEF CON, or other third parties shown in an image. You are responsible for any additional permission your use requires.

06

No endorsement

Do not state or imply that Alex Chaveriat, a person pictured, DEF CON, or another organization endorses your use. Do not use a photograph in a defamatory, deceptive, harassing, or unlawful context.

07

Outside the rules?

Interesting projects are encouraged. If your use falls outside these terms—or you are unsure—find Alex on the wire and ask. Permission may be available; surprises are simply less fun when lawyers are involved.
